These patient volunteer trials will involve taking single or multiple doses of investigational and/or marketed medicines for a period of time or just taking blood samples from you. Participation will require a number of hours of your time and frequently involves overnight stays. Most of our trials are conducted at our new facility in Welwyn Garden City, an approximately 25 minute train journey from Kings Cross, London.

If you are considered eligible to participate in one of our patient volunteer clinical trials, you will benefit from a friendly and relaxing atmosphere in which your safety and comfort is ensured with the following:

  • Experienced, qualified medical and nursing staff
  • Spacious lounges with flat-screen TVs, DVD players and pool tables
  • Rooms with computer, internet access and game consoles

More information about Applied Clinical Development Unit (ACDU), where our healthy volunteer & patient volunteer clinical trials are conducted.

All medicines have to pass a number of rigorous tests to ensure they are both well tolerated and effective. Roche ACDU conducts early stage clinical trials, known as Phase I trials.

The ACDU consists of an experienced medical and nursing team and has its own quality management team to ensure that the standards within the unit meet those agreed by the UK Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) and internationally agreed industry standards for conducting clinical trials. All proposed patient volunteer trials are reviewed by an independent Ethics Committee and/or a NHS Research Ethics Committee. Our principal concern is always the safety of our volunteers.
